Update: Apple is now urging users of iPhone 4s, iPad Mini 1st, iPad 2nd and iPad 3rd generation to be updated to iOS 9.3.6, by Nov 3rd, 2019 to continue using their services. You can find the download links for the firmware below.

Active Firmwares:

Apple will only be signing two iOS versions at once – the latest one and the previous one. With the previous firmware, they stop signing after a week and, right now the below-listed version is the only ( active firmware ).

  • iOS 9.3.6

Expired Firmwares:

The following iOS 9 versions are no longer being signed:

  • iOS 9
  • iOS 9.0.1
  • iOS 9.0.2
  • iOS 9.1
  • iOS 9.2
  • iOS 9.2.1
  • iOS 9.3
  • iOS 9.3.1
  • iOS 9.3.2
  • iOS 9.3.3
  • iOS 9.3.4
  • iOS 9.3.5

If you try to put one of the expired versions on your iOS device, you will get a Requested Build Error 3194; it will tell you that your device isn’t eligible for the requested build. Keep reading because we will be telling you how you can safely downgrade your iOS version.

How to Install iOS 9 Firmware:

Before we get busy, there are a couple of things you need to do:

First, make sure that iTunes is up to date; you will need it for two methods:

  1. Launch iTunes and click Help > Check For Updates itunes-update-mac
  2. If iTunes requires updating, instructions will appear on the screen – follow them

Second, make sure your data is backed up – if anything goes wrong, you will lose everything.

Third, disable Find My iPhone/iPad and Passcode (Touch ID if it is enabled). These can be switched back on later.

Method 1: Over the Air (OTA)

While this is the smallest update, it is not compatible with any jailbreak; if you intend to install Cydia, do not use this method:

  1. Launch Settings > General on your device
  2. Choose Software Update
  3. When iOS 9 update is found tap Download ios_9.3.5 ota
  4. Tap on Install and leave your device to update; when it reboots, it will be on the Hello screen.

Method 2: iTunes

  1. Plug your device into your computer and open iTunes
  2. If you have two or more devise registered, click the Summary for the device connected
  3. Click on Update>Install itunes-update-iphone
  4. Wait; your iPhone or iPad will reboot when the update is finished
  5. The Hello screen appears, and you can begin setting your device up

Method 3: iTunes with IPSW

  1. Click the IPSW link below that corresponds to your device
  2. Connect your device to your C/Mac and open iTunes
  3. Choose the Summary for the connected device (only if you have more than one registered)
  4. Press either the SHIFT (Windows) or ALT (Mac) key and click Restore at the same time itunes-restore
  5. Find your IPSW file and click on it ipsw-ios
  6. Click on Install and iTunes will update your iPhone or iPad
  7. When its all done, your device will reboot into the Hello screen

  14. atualizei meu ipad3 3g para a versão 9.3. e não consigo mais baixar os antigos apps. Pedem IOS superior a 10. com o cydia eu vou conseguir baixar esses apps que já estavam no meu ipad? exemplo, google home, chorme, mozila, spotify, tastemade.. são alguns dos apps que não consigo baixar novamente.
    o que posso fazer para conseguir usar esses apps no meu ipad? Downgrade ira apenas voltar o ios mas msm assim não vou conseguir baixar novamente esses apps, certo? preciso de ajuda. mto obrigada.

    I have iPad 2 and I tried using the firmware 9.3.6 (download link above) but it gives me the error message that the this firmware is not supported.

  28. I am user of iPhone 4 with version 7.1.2 16 GB. No apps are working on this version mainly like whatsapp and twitter. so need to update and
    I have tried 8.4.1 and also 9.3.6 for my iPhone 4 with help of iTunes. Both the time i got the same error i.e. “The iPhone/iPad/iPod touch could not be updated because the firmware is not compatible”.
    Second i have tried to install the whatsapp with help of cydia but its also not installing with help of PC, Cable and iPhone.

  30. How can i upgrade 9.3.6 to ios 13 on ipad3. Older ipad 2012 but works perfectly. Some streaming services like netflix not working now. Needs 13.

  31. I try to jailbreak my Ipad 2 based on ios 9.3.5 but I have this issue:
    file: installer.cpp; line: 71; what: _assert(!teams.empty())

    It’s not possible to jailbreak now?

  33. Hi guys, when i go through the Phoenix app a message comes up: “Prompt. Failed to verify identity, please contact customer service to solve the problem.”

    And then the app closes.

    Any ideas??
